past week

week one of 2hr oil portrait painting class

ink 'n paint on comic character head. i'm not to happy with the look. probably will just bite the bullet and draw the comic, once some scripts come my way.

random digital drawing i have been working on to get my self more acquainted with my tablet and the drawing powers of photoshop.

Clone Cover and Sexy Ladies

The last of the sketches I'll be posting for a while. Besides these, I'm also working on a top-secret project for a toy designer. All I can say is that it's a lot of fun. Neda, the Detective, and the sketch below will have to wait until I finish the top-secret stuff. But I'm trying to get everything mostly done before next week! (16 drawings! Fingers crossed!)

This is a cover for my friend's comic book, about a girl who discovers that she's a the clone of a super-villainess. I'm also posting the sketch of the villainess, which I'm quite happy with. After drawing all the kiddy-toy stuff, it feels good to draw a sexy lady. :)

Voice

Among other things, I've been following the twitter feed for the Iran election protests, and was inspired last Saturday to draw this up. It is in honor of the young woman, Neda, who was shot in the street and killed during the chaos in Tehran. If you're like, "What's with the birds?"--they're Twitter birds. When I get some free time I'll paint it.

Rest in peace, Neda. Presently in Iran things seem to have settled down, and the government-run newsfeeds have been broadcasting the arrested protesters reading "confessions" that the protests were entirely a foreign plot.

In the meantime, I'm wholed up with 3 illustration jobs (totalling some 20 illustrations) and the prep work for my art class that starts next week. I feel so stagnant right now, with all this work and nothing getting done very quickly. So, for now, please suffer through these half-finished works.

Detective

This is a "book cover" illustration I'm doing for a guy in Australia. I sketched a lot of the stuff seperately and then mashed it together in PS because I didn't feel like dragging my lightbox out. Now I'll ink it and color it. Moody blue hues, film noir lighting.

parade

I helped make these bird puppets! They'll be in the Halloween Lantern Parade in the fall. You should all go see it.

This is the closest thing I could find to a close up:
Also, I'm walking on stilts in this photo (I'm the one on the far right):
I'll post more about this on my own blog. (Maybe. If I feel like it.)

edit: This was all done for/with/through Nana Projects.

Jillian Tamaki's sketchbooking tips

I highly recommend everyone check out Jillian Tamaki's new post with her thoughts on sketchbooking. What she has to say is very relevant, and probably something I should make myself read at least once every day.
http://www.jilliantamaki.com/sketchbook/sketchbook.html

She also has a post on Idea Generation for Illustrations, which is pure gold.

Steam-punk Contest!

I won FIRST prize (instead of Grand prize) which is a copy of the game Damnation (which was panned in reviews... oh well) but at least I know I'm one of the top 6 people who entered the contest (1 Grand prize winner and 5 First prize winners) if they post the other entries online then I'll post a link!

Plumbago Portraits

Hello there.
I've been doing some small portrait drawings. I have decided to fill a moleskin with a person a page this summer, these are a first few. They are graphite, two to four 1/2  inches in height.

(Portrait miniatures: Intended originally to celebrate romance or mourn the dead. Usually accompanied with ornamental hair of the beloved/deceased. Let me know if you think I should collect hair to go with these portraits.)

Web comic

i've been working with a friend on starting a web comic, all visuals are on me and the story is on him. I told him i wanted to try making 3d models and then posing them for the comic because i'm not very consistent at illustrating and to build up a bit of 3d experience and work examples. His only requirement is that he wants it to look flat so i'm going to learn how to use ink 'n paint and create a nice look for the comic.

So right now i have part of the base model for the main character, i mean he needs ears and hair and clothes, probably some more personality in the features. Also the eye/brow area looks a bit odd to me still. I need to look more at the wireframe i'm not sure how "correct" and efficient it is. I'm not using orthos because i didn't feel like it. in other news i ordered and intous4 and want to enter 11second club for this month (as soon as i get over my lipsync/2d inability, and get back from south carolina)

CHARACTERS

Why, if it isn't some character designs! These are from my summer class with Brian Ralph. Top is a rabidly riteous pilot (pick a character trait and profession from a list at random and DRAW) and my odd couple assignment, Black Scarf and Yolene (whom some of you may remember from thier short-lived comic idea freshman year). I did a comic about those two, but my scanner is TOO SMAAAAALL and can't handle how badass a punch to the face from Black Scarf would be. Also it's scanning everything at an angle for some reason... Either way, comics coming soon!

Concept! Demon Boy

Save for any major changes this is the Demon Boy concept... I need to figure out a name to call him... I was going for a sort of Saturday morning cartoon sorta look, I'm pretty excited about starting to model him... I haven't concepted the waistband design yet but I want to do some Mayan design studies and maybe some south american weaving designs under my belt... no pun intended... until I do a complete concept, which I will obviously be doing in a separate document... ANYWHO it's getting late! time for bed... after some Pizza...mmmnnn

Toadling

for John...

A Birthday Card

This is the birthday card that I made for my friend Andrea. She loves rainbows, stars, and flowers. I have a book of charlie chaplain stills, and a few bags full of scraps, stickers and doo-dads. The little bar by our kitchen (I don't have a desk at home) is covered with paint, glue, tape, scraps, etc.
The main picture on this card is a combination of a picture of the Tramp and and an upside down photo of trees in the winter. Add some paint and stickers, and ta-da! I love it! I hope she likes it too.

Fanart is Not Dead

I just want you guys to know...this is totally relevant. And good cartooning practice. A lot of research and studies went into its production, and I had a whole lot of fun doing it.
Since you most likely won't recognize them (although since it's me, you can probably guess), they're the Power Rangers from this season. Yes, I am watching it.
p.s.--love you all! <3
